I didn’t speak with Tosin Adarabioyo – Eguavoen

Super Eagles stand-in coach Augustine Eguavoen has cleared the air around Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo and his possible listing in Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, against Libya.

Since the Chelsea defender indicated his intention to play for Nigeria, there have been unofficial discussions on Adarabioyo getting his first Nigeria call-up by next month under the interim coach of the Eagles. Eguavoen on Friday clarified that he had yet to make any direct contact with the 27-year-old defender concerning the national team.

Eguavoen told Premium Times, “I didn’t speak with Tosin, but he’s a good player.

“He’s one of the players we’re monitoring. Every Nigerian playing worldwide has the right to play for Nigeria, including Tosin.”

Adarabioyo who has Nigerian parents remains eligible to represent both England and Nigeria.

It is believed the Chelsea centre-back is subtly leaning towards committing his international future to Nigeria after being left out of England’s squad for the 2024 European Championship,

Eguavoen is expected to stick with the defensive trio of William Troost-Ekong, Semi Ajayi, and Calvin Bassey, he used for the 3-0 win over Benin Republic in Uyo and a goalless draw against Rwanda in Kigali earlier in September for the games against Libya.

The coach stated, “Same approach, the players were willing to do it (then) and they still want to do it, and it’s completely up to them. We can only advise them.”

The Super Eagles top Group D with four points from two matches and two victories against Libya next month, which could seal a qualification ticket for AFCON 2024 which will be held in Morocco.
