Nigeria beats Libya to maintain AFCON qualifiers lead

Nigeria needed just a simple win to maintain leadership but had to work extra hard to get a late goal against Libya in a 2025 AFCON qualifier on Friday in Uyo. Substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru scored for the Super Eagles in the 86th minute.

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Cup Group D qualifiers had the Eagles labour for almost all the match but could not find a way past the Libyan defense and goalkeeper Murad Al Wuheeshi who engaged time wasting tactics all through the match.

The 1-0 win keeps Nigeria top of the group with seven points from their first three matches. Nigeria had beaten Benin Republic in Uyo and played a goalless draw in Rwanda in the first two matches. Fellow Group D member, Republic of Benin thrashed Rwanda 3-0. The Super Eagles travel to Benghazi, Libya for the return match on Tuesday. A simple win could guarantee Nigeria a ticket to the 2025 tournament in Morocco even with games still left to be played.
