No food, no Wi-Fi, Boniface cries out as Super Eagles sleep at Libyan airport

It is still a very sad situation for Nigeria’s Super Eagles as they remained trapped at the Al-Albraq Airport, Albraq by the Libyan authorities. The Eagles have spent over 13 hours at the cold airport and were forced to sleep there after the Libyan airport officials kept the gates shut. The Nigerian delegation was still at the airport by 5.30am local time with no buses in sight to take them down to Benghazi, their original destination.

This morning a very tired and hungry Nigeria and Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface cried out via his X account (formerly Twitter) in a desperate bid to get help from the Confederation of African Football.

Boniface wrote, “Been at the airport for almost 13 hours no food no wifi, nowhere to sleep.

“Africans we can do better.”

It was learned that the poor security situation in Libya has made it even more difficult for the Nigerian diplomatic mission to intervene as they would need clearance to move in and change the situation for the team. The Nigerian diplomats have been waiting for the approval since Sunday night, we learned.

The Nigeria Football Federation Media informed journalists late on Sunday night, “About an hour to landing, the Nigerian aircraft approaching its destination, Benghazi was diverted to another city more than a two-hour drive from the original destination.”

Libya and Nigeria are scheduled to play an AFCON 2024 qualifying match on Tuesday. Nigeria won the first leg played in Uyo, Akwa Ibom on Friday, 1-0.
