Shehu Dikko has been appointed as the Chairman of the newly restored National Sports Commission, Extrasportsnigeria, reports. The Federal Ministry of Sports has been scrapped for the Commission.

Dikko is a former chairman of the League Management Company (LMC) and @nd Vice President of the Nigeria Football Federation.

President Bola Tinubu announced the scrapping of the Ministry of Sports Development after the meeting of the Federal Executive Council on Wednesday, 23 October in Abuja.

President Tinubu urged Dikko and the other new appointees to see their roles as a “call to serve the nation with utmost dedication.”

The document made available by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga reads, “All appointees must understand the administration’s determination to set Nigeria on the path to irreversible growth.”

Dikko’s appointment as Chairman is seen as a part of the effort by government to restructure and sports management run by professionals.

The Ministry of Sports Development was roundly condemned by Nigerians for woeful outing at the 2024 Tokyo Olympics in spite of the billions of Naira approved for the outing. Dikko will work to change this poor image of the sports ministry.
