In an open letter to the United States president, the International Boxing Association’s leaders expressed gratitude for his stance on banning transgender athletes from partaking in women’s sports and encouraged him to investigate the possible removal of the discipline from LA28’s programme.
The address, made public on Wednesday, was co-signed by IBA President Umar Kremlev and Chief Executive Officer Chris Roberts, who both offered Trump the chance to work together in order to defend the rights of boxers worldwide, according to an InsideTheGames report.
“Congratulations on your inauguration as President of the United States of America. This momentous occasion marks not only a new chapter in your distinguished political career, but also a pivotal moment for the United States and the global community.” So begins the message from the IBA’s executives, following his presidential inauguration on Tuesday.
The IBA leaders wanted to express their appreciation to the new resident of the White House for some of the sports-related policies he announced on his first day leading the nation after Joe Biden’s presidency from 2021 to 2025 and the end of his own first run after winning in 2017. “We, along with many others around the world, look forward to the positive impact of your second term,” the letter reads.
The content of the dispatch mainly focuses on the alignment with Trump’s stance, which he made clear during the Paris 2024 Olympics, precisely when the controversy surrounding women’s boxing hit new highs. “We would also like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude for your firm and principled stance regarding the inadmissibility of ineligible athletes in women’s boxing competitions,” the letter adds.
The IBA leaders described Trump’s actions as a firm commitment to ensuring fair competition and protecting the integrity of women’s sport, labelling them as “commendable” and reiterated that the organisation “welcomes” the recent legislation passed by the US Congress banning transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports.
“This legislation is consistent with our renewed policy efforts to promote gender equality and protect the health and well-being of female athletes,” the letter continues. “We believe this approach not only protects the integrity of women’s sport, but also fosters an environment in which all athletes can thrive and compete safely and fairly.”
