Kenya’s Kibet, Ethiopia’s Guta Meseret win 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon

Kenya’s Edwin Kibet has won the 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, crossing the finish line with an official time of 2:14:19:17, Saturday, February 14th.

Kibet, the 2023 champion, showcased remarkable resilience despite arriving in Nigeria barely 24 hours before Saturday’s race.

The celebrated Kenyan earned him the top prize of $50,000, and underling the fact that he is one of the marathon’s most formidable competitors.

Nehemiah Kipyegon – 2:16:37:47 and Bernard Cheruiyot – 2:17:17:13 also from Kenya, finished second and third respectively, as the East Africans recorded a clean sweep this year.

In the women’s category, Ethiopia’s Guta Hirpa emerged victorious, clocking a time of 2 hours and 37.02 minutes.

The 2025 champion is the third-time winner of the marathon women’s event.

While the first Nigerian to finish the race, Nyango Boyi made history by finishing in the top 10 positions.

He finished the race in 8th place, clocking a time of 2:25:41.58, which will earn him a prize award of $4,000. As the first Nigerian to finish the race, Boyi also won the N2 million top prize in the Nigerian category.

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was also one of the participants in this year’s Lagos City Marathon.

About 37,000 runners competed in the 10km and 42km races of the 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.

Speaking at the event, the General Manager of the race and retired Nigerian long jumper, Yusuf Ali, said, “The figure was derived from the number of running kits distributed out of the over 60,000 runners who registered to take part.”

The 42km race commenced at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, by 6:30 am, while the 10km marathon started at the Grace Garden Event Centre in Lekki by 9:30 am, with both races terminating at Eko Atlantic City.

The race, which started in 2016, entered its 10th year..
