Amaju Pinnick loses FIFA seat

Pius Ayinor

Amaju Pinnick has lost his re-election bid into the FIFA council.

Pinnick, a former president of the Nigeria Football Federation, failed to secure the required votes to earn a slot among the six members for Africa on the council.

The former Delta State FA Chairman scored 28 votes in the election held at the 14th CAF extraordinary general assembly on Wednesday in Cairo, Egypt.

His failed bid surely comes as a surprise after many African football pundits had favoured him to win as he made for a second term bid.

The elected members from the Wednesday’s election are Faouzi Lekjaa of Morocco, Mauritania’s Ahmed Yahya, Kanizat Ibrahim of Comoros, Djibouti’s Souleiman Waberi, Hamidou Djibrilla of Niger and Egypt’s Hani Abo Rida.

Pinnick lost out narrowly with just one vote less than Yahya and Waberi.

No Anglophone member of the continental body made the cut.

Pinnick was elected into the council in March in Rabat, Morocco.

South African business entrepreneur Patrice Motsepe was re-elected unopposed as President of the CAF, extending his leadership of the continent’s footballing body until 2029.
