Coach Idowu Timothy Abimbola, organiser of the Lekki Summer League promises that the Linen edition of the renowned youth basketball event is going to be hair-raising and action-packed.
Abimbola, who is the Head Coach of Hoops N’ Read basketball club made this public on Tuesday in an interview.
Abimbola said that the objective of the Linen edition is to give kid, mostly secondary school age pupils in Lagos State, the platform to showcase their talents to the world.
He added that Season 4 of the Lekki Summer League is not just an opportunity to be showcasing their talents but also an avenue to understand the game better, network and to be scouted.
The Lekki Summer League, which is the first youth focused basketball tournament on the Island is breading champions as various past winners are representing various clubs in Nigeria and Africa.
Under the auspices of the Lekki Summer League, Abimbola has contributed to basketball development in Nigeria by introducing the slamming and dunking to various communities across Lagos State.
“Every summer, teenagers around Lagos Island and Lekki Peninsula are looking forward to participating in Summer League,” he explained.
“Our focus to give the players a platform to express themselves, be seen and scouted for further opportunities in the game, we award medals to the top 3 teams and trophy to the champion,” Coach Abimbola further explained.
In a bid to introduce basketball to individuals and communities across Lagos State, Coach Abimbola, is looking to expand the scope of the esteemed Lekki Summer League.
He said that expanding the scope of the Lekki Summer League has been his goal, but is currently beyond his reach due to lack of government and corporate bodies support.
He stressed that various attempts to gain government backing proved abortive, as the League which is in it’s 4th year is backed by private individuals.
“We made contact with government officials last year and we couldn’t get any support. Every other support financially has come from private individuals who have sponsored logistics, venue, jerseys, balls, medals and trophy,” he added.
He called on the government, corporate bodies and basketball loving individuals to support the Lekki Summer League and help unearth basketball gems across the state.
