CBN Junior Tennis: Rain disrupts exciting opening day

A heavy downpour washed off all but three matches on the opening day schedule on Tuesday in the CBN Junior Tennis Championship in Lagos, Extrasportnigeria.wordpress.com reports. Despite the disruption caused by the rain, organisers say the preliminary and group stages will be completed in good time for the semi-finals and finals planned for Friday and Saturday.

In one of the three matches completed, Barakat Ganiyu from Oyo State beat Whitney Orimoleye 9-2 while Ghazal Ashim, the Number 2 seed in the Boys 12 also from Oyo State defeated Benedict Ajayi 9-1.

In a match that turned out to be the highlight of the day, Abdulmalik Salau of Lagos outlasted Muazam Yusuf from Kano 9-8 in a Boys 12 match.

The tournament which has attracted the best players from all over the country is featuring competitions in boys and girls 12s, 14s and 16s and has been the major cornerstone of the development of tennis in Nigeria.
