AFN in extraordinary congress to decide on new election venue

The Extraordinary Congress of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria will be held today.

It was learned that the meeting which will you be virtual, was called to take a final decision on the venue of the forthcoming elections into the AFN.

All the chairmen and secretaries of the 36 state athletics associations and Abuja as well as the current AFN board members and a representative of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), are expected to attend the emergency congress to be chaired by AFN President Chief Tonobok Okowa.

The Congress is expected to begin by 2pm Nigeria time and it will x-ray the advice by the National Sports Commission, to move the venue of the presidential election from Asaba, the Delta State capital to Abuja.

The NSC says that Asaba, in Delta State, is not a neutral venue because three of the candidates seeking to lead the Athletics Federation of Nigeria for the next four years are from that State.

The Congress which is the highest organ of the Federation is expected to decide on the final venue and other arrangements for the polls.

26 States delegates attended the last AFN Congress in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, South-south, Nigeria where some far reaching decisions on the polls were reached as well as how the sport should go in the next four years.
