The Super Eagles of Nigeria took a commanding 2–0 lead against the Black Stars of Ghana in the first half of the Unity Cup and the Ghanaians could not recover as the match ended 2-1, Extrasportnigeria.wordpress.com.
Cyriel Dessers opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a quality goal. The assist came off Sodiq Ismail who plays for Remo Stars in the Nigerian Premier Football League.
Barely five minutes later Nigeria’s advantage was extended when Ghana’s Razak Simpson mistakenly turned the ball into his net, gifting the Super Eagles a needed second goal.
The first half of the game ended 2-0.
The pressure by the Black Stars intensified in the second half. They made a real game of it in the second half and reduced the deficit with 20 minutes to go as substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante scored his first international goal.
Caleb Yirenkyi did his very best to mark his Ghana debut with a goal whilst Abu Francis was denied an equaliser by a superb save from Stanley Nwabali as Nigeria held on for the win. Their reward is a showdown with Jamaica on Saturday.
On Tuesday Ghana’s coach, Otto Addo,underlined the importance of the game on Monday.
He said, “This game presents Ghana an opportunity to restore pride, to fuel the passion of the fans, and to remind the continent that the Black Stars are still a force to reckon with.”
The Unity Cup is a friendly football tournament aimed at fostering camaraderie among nations with historical and cultural ties, particularly from Africa and the Diaspora.
