VP Shettima to accompany Buhari’s body back from London

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Vice-President Kashim Shettima to proceed to London and accompany the body of late president Muhammadu Buhari back to Nigeria.

A statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the spokesman for Tinubu, confirmed that Buhari died in London around 4.30pm on Sunday as well as announcing how the body would be brought back.

Onanuga said, “President Tinubu has spoken with Mrs Aishat Buhari, the former President’s widow and offered his deep condolences

 “President Tinubu has also ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima to proceed to the United Kingdom to accompany President Muhammadu Buhari’s body back to Nigeria.”

He also directed that national flags be flown at half-staff “as a mark of respect for the departed leader.”

President Buhari, served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023 after previously leading the country as a military head of state between 1983 and 1985.

Though details of the illness were not made public, the former president was believed to be recuperating until his condition took a turn.
