The federal government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday a public holiday in honour of late President Muhammadu Buhari who died on Sunday in London.
This was announced by the interior minister, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, according to a statement by the ministry on Monday.
The minister said, “In furtherance to the seven days of National mourning declared by President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 15 July, as a Public Holiday in honour of the late former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.”
The Minister stated that the holiday is a mark of respect for the late President’s service to the nation.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”
The burial of Buhari has been rescheduled for Tuesday instead the earlier date of Monday, July 14.
His body is expected to arrive in Katsina State by midday on Tuesday, ahead of his burial scheduled for 2pm the same day in Daura, Katsina State.
President Buhari, served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023 after previously leading the country as a military head of state between 1983 and 1985.
