Reaching semifinals, first step of my success – Success Oyibu

It is the first international outing for sprint sensation in Team Nigeria at the Confederation of Africa Athletics, (CAA), U18/U20 Championship, Success Oyibu, but she has her sights set on success. On Monday, she said qualifying for the semifinals of the youth event is the first stage of her success plan at the championship.

She spoke immediately after Heat 1 in a time of 11.87 (-1.4) on Day 1 of the championship.

Oyibu expressed dissatisfaction about her performance in the heats, stating that although her main objective at the championship is to keep winning every race step by step, she was expecting a better time.

“It wasn’t what I was expecting but I think what I need is just to qualify for the semi-finals, and maybe in the finals do better than that,” she said.

She explained that her big goal at the championship is make her name heard across the continent and the world, emphasizing that she has been training for three years to make that happen.

“It is my first international competition representing Nigeria, so I just want to make my name heard, they should know me because I have been training so hard for the competition. I’ve been training for like 3 years. I was just like when I come here, my name must be heard not just that I come here and go,” she said.

Oyibu went on to explain that the final stage of her goal is to claim a gold medal at the event with a new personal best.

She praised the Confederation of Africa Athletics, the Nigeria Sports Commission, (NSC), and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, (AFN), for putting together the event, giving young athletes across the continent a reason to embrace the sport.
