About 16 inmates have escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State in Middle Belt, Nigeria. The incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday following a violent breach of the facility’s security the managers of the Federal facility said.
The Nigerian Correctional Service spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, confirmed the incident in a statement, and added that the escape occurred after the inmates overpowered the personnel on duty. He said that the attackers compromised the situation, enabling 16 prisoners to flee.
The statement reads, “In the course of containing the situation, five personnel of the Custodial Centre sustained varying degrees of injury, with two currently serious and receiving urgent medical attentions at a government health facility. Seven of the fleeing inmates have been recaptured and are now in custody.”
Following the breakout, the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, visited the facility and ordered a full-scale investigation into the circumstances leading to the escape.
The Keffi incident is not the only in recent times. There was the 2024 Suleja prison collapse that saw nearly 120 inmates escape; the 2022 Kuje prison attack which freed at least 600 inmates including suspected Boko Haram terrorists, and the 2021 mass prison breaks in Imo and Oyo states which saw thousands of dangerous felon run into town.
