Nigerian League champions, Remo Stars began the defence of their title with a 1-1 draw at home to Rivers United in what was the first game of the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League season.

The Ikenne-based side which played at their temporary home of MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, fell behind as early as the third minute when Aniekeme Okon headed into the far corner past Serge Obassa.

But it took the hosts just six minutes after conceding to pull level from returning striker, Victor Mbaoma. The goal is Mbaoma’s 52nd career NPFL goal, 16 of them for Remo Stars. However, the forward, who returned to Remo after two years with APR FC in Rwanda, was replaced by Adama Goita, another new signing, at 21 minutes due to injury.

Rivers were reduced to 10 men in the closing minutes of the game after defender Temple Emekayi got his marching orders for a dangerous high-footed tackle.

The match extended Remo Stars’ home record to 52 matches unbeaten.

‎Remo Stars visit Kun Khalifat in Week 2 of the NPFL, while Rivers United will host Kwara United, the 2025 President’s Federation Cup champions.
