Nigeria Women’s Premier League champions Bayelsa Queens booked their place in the semifinals of the CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU B qualifiers on Wednesday night. They got a spot after a commanding 3-0 victory over Togo’s ASKO.
The queens from Bayelsa State dominated the game from the start to finish but in spite of the differences, both sides went into the break level.
The breakthrough arrived just two minutes after the restart when ASKO defender Oumou Bani inadvertently turned the ball into her team’s net under pressure.
That early second-half goal lifted the Nigerians, who doubled their advantage six minutes later. Janet Akekoromowei delivered a teasing cross that Alaba Olabiyi powered home with a firm header to make it 2-0. Then it became the turn of teen sensation Shakirat Moshood. Fresh from her heroics in Bayelsa’s opening game against Ghana’s Police Ladies, she latched onto a long ball from Sefiat Idris and finished with a composed left-footed strike.
The 17-year-old, who has now scored twice in the tournament, once again boosted her growing reputation as one of Nigeria’s brightest young prospects. Bayelsa Queens had defeated Police Ladies 2-1 in their first outing, meaning Wednesday’s win takes them to six points from two matches and guarantees a semifinal berth with a group game still to play.
ASKO are already out after the back-to-back defeats, including a 1-0 loss to Sam Nelly of Benin in their opening match.
Bayelsa Queens will now face Sam Nelly in their final group match.
