Nigeria vs Rwanda: Chelle defends Nwabali, says it was a good game

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle is standing firmly behind goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali despite criticism over his performance in Nigeria’s match against Rwanda.

The goalkeeper has come under fire after receiving a yellow card for his aggressive antics during the qualifier which the Super Eagles won 1-0 in Uyo on Saturday. Some followers of the Eagles have suggested that he should be cautioned ahead of Tuesday’s crucial World Cup clash against South Africa.

But in Bloemfontein on Monday, Chelle praised Nwabali’s display and insisted his approach was exactly what he demanded from his players.

“You know when your coach asks you to have warrior set of mind. So I am happy about his game two days ago. He had a great game and I want him to be like that tomorrow (against South Africa),” he said.

Chelle wants his teammates to exhibit the kind of mentality displayed by the goalkeeper,

“He played a great game and his state of mind was perfect. For me he needs to continue that and I ask that from all my players.”

Chelle will once again rely on Nwabali, who plays professionally in South Africa with Chippa United to deliver a solid performance when Nigeria faces Bafana Bafana in Bloemfontein.

Victory will be vital for the Super Eagles to revive their qualification hopes for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico after a shaky start to the campaign.
