2026 World Cup: Super Eagles’ disappointment and disillusionment

By Dr Femi Eperokun

The recent performance of the Nigeria national team, the Super Eagles, has been nothing short of dismal. Despite reaching the semifinals of the last African Cup of Nations and boasting two consecutive African Footballers of the Year, the team’s failure to qualify for the inaugural Tri-Nations World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico is a glaring indictment of their inability to capitalize on potential.

The hiring of coaches has seemingly yielded no tangible results, and the team’s inability to build on past successes is a cause for concern. How could a team with such exceptional talent and experience falter at this critical juncture? The lack of consolidation and strategic planning is evident, and it’s imperative that the team regroups and reassess their approach to regaining their competitive edge.

The disappointment is palpable, and it’s time for introspection and accountability. The team’s fortunes need to be rebuilt, and it’s crucial that they learn from past mistakes to forge a path forward.
