Nigerian league mourns as Ikorodu United vs Barau Referee Assessor, Enagbare dies in Lagos

The Nigerian league weekend fixtures got a tragic side as the Referee Assessor, Rachel Enaghere, for the Ikorodu United versus Barau match in Lagos on Sunday died in hospital barely as the game ended.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Gbenga Elegbeleye, has described the death of Mrs. Enagbere as a huge loss to the league and entire football community in the country.

Enagbere was in Lagos as the Referees Assessor for the NPFL Matchday 4 fixture between hosts Ikorodu City and Barau FC from Kano.

She was said to have fallen seriously ill at the stadium and was then rushed to a private hospital in the Surulere area of Lagos, Havanah Hospital where she later died of complications from a yet to be disclosed illness.

“The NPFL family is deeply saddened by the unfortunate and unexpected passing of the former referee who has been working with us as a match referee assessor.

“We extend our sincere condolences to her immediate family and to the Nigeria Referees Association (NRA),” Elegbeleye said.

He said the league body will liaise with the Lagos State Football Association (LSFA), the Lagos Referees Council, and the NRA towards having the body returned to the family.
