The defending champions of the Zenith Bank/NBBF Women’s Basketball League, MFM, on Wednesday returned to winning ways, thrashing Nigeria Customs 78-42. This follows their shock defeat on the opening day to Dolphins.
Despite leading with more than 15 points against Dolphins on Tuesday, the champions succumbed to aggressive and purposeful offense from their opponents as they lost the game 51-41.
MFM Coach Ochuko Owolabi said the loss to the Dolphins was a wake-up call for the team and was happy that they responded with the win against Customs.
“And now we must also get our acts together when we take on The Titans in our final group game on Thursday to secure a place in the last four,” she said.
In the first game of Wednesday, Bayelsa Blue Whales also secured their first win of the Final-8, beating Air Warriors 65-47 to give themselves a chance of qualifying for the final four with both Air Warriors and Nigeria Customs currently on the verge of elimination after losing two games in the series.
Speaking with our correspondent, the Head Coach, Bayelsa Blue Whales, Tony Nelson, said there was hope for them as they have already won a game and all they need to do is to win their final game and “from the semifinal, anything can happen.”
Dolphins also put their feet almost in the final after securing another victory in the finals, defeating Titans 63-39 points.
Meanwhile, the teams have applauded the sponsor of the league, Zenith Bank, for the upward review of the prize money for this year’s final.
Zenith Bank announced new prize money of N7.5m for the winners while the second and third runners up will go home with N5m and N3m respectively.
