SAPETRO Futures Tennis Championship attracts massive parental support

The 2025 SAPETRO Futures Tennis Championship is attracting massive parental support with many parents accompanying their children from all over the country for the tournament.

Although the heavy downpour in Lagos Tuesday wiped out all but three matches, some parents joined the  young players to sing and dance waiting for the rain to abate.

The weather was kinder Wednesday with organisers getting in 52 matches to get back on track to reach semifinal deciders slated for Ikoyi Club on Friday.

The top seeds in the Boys 16s and Girls 16s beat their opponents pretty handily. Seyi Ogunsakin from Lekmak Tennis Academy in Ekiti beat Olamide Aremu from Ogun 10-3, 10-3 while Isa Yahaya defeated Joseph Austin from Oyo State 10-8, 10-5.

Girls 16s top seed and defending champion, Goodnews Aina from Ekiti, beat Sarah Sede Dahz from Kwara 10-3, 10-4 and the No.2 seed Gloria Samuel, also from Ekiti, overran Marian Ogunbamwo from Lagos 10-1, 10-4.

The best match of the day, however, came in the Boys 14s where Goodluck Tersoo, the No.1 seed from Abuja struggled in the first set against Babalola Mubarak from Oyo state but eventually came through 12-10, 10-3.

Godwin Kienka, director of the International Tennis Academy asked about the rain disruptions said the officials are all working hard to cope.

“I had worked at the Wimbledon Championships as an official and as a journalist for several years, and I think I know a thing or two about managing rain delays.”

The grand finale is scheduled to hold on Saturday at the Ikoyi Club on Saturday starting 12 noon.
