Nigerian clubs Kwara United and Abia Warriors were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday, September 28, in the preliminary round..
Kwara United, who lost 4-3 to Ghana’s Asante Kotoko in the first leg last week had their fans and Nigerians quite hopeful but were surprisingly beaten 1-0 in the return fixture at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta. The result gave Kotoko a 5-3 aggregate win.
The only goal of the game came off Hubert Gyau. The Porcupine Warriors found the breakthrough nine minutes after half-time when Gyau’s low driving shot slipped past the Kwara goalkeeper.
From there, Kotoko kept their composure, defending stoutly against late Nigerian pressure to seal a 5-3 aggregate triumph.
Abia Warriors also lost 1-0 but this time away in Bamako to Djoliba Athletic Club to exit the competition on a 2-1 aggregate. The first leg had ended 1-1 home in a match played at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
The Ghanaian giants now move into the final preliminary round, where they will face Moroccan heavyweights Wydad Casablanca – the first leg scheduled for October 18 in Ghana, with the return in Morocco on October 25.
