Mamelodi Sundowns thrash Remo Stars 5-1 in Abeokuta

Mamelodi Sundowns thrashed Remo Stars 5-1 in their CAF Champions League final qualifying round first leg match played on Sunday at the MKO Abiola stadium in Abeokuta.

The South Africans scored thrice in the second half as the Nigeria Premier Football League champions struggled to get a footing. The match ended at 5-1 with all five goals scored different players for the South African side. Remo’s only goal was scored by Samson Olasupo in the second half at a point when they were already down by four goals.

The visitors took the lead through Tashreeq Mathews on 12 minutes with a low shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box, before Peter Shalulile effortlessly slotted beyond a motionless goalkeeper to double.

Mamelodi Sundowns continued their dominance from the start of the second half and were rewarded with a third goal in the 60th minute by Miguel Reisinho.

Substitutes Arthur De Oliveira and Katlego Ntsabeleng came off the bench to score the fourth and fifth goals in the 74th and 84th minutes respectively, before Remo Stars’ Samson Olasupo netted a consolation goal with a shot from outside the 18-yard box in the 76th minute for some respite.

But Sundowns were not done as they as Tsiki Ntsabeleng slotted home the fifth goal five minutes before the end to seal the 5-1 win on his CCL debut.

Sundowns host Remo Stars in the second leg at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium, Pretoria, on October 26 with the chances of the Nigerian champions crossing into the main draw looking very dim.

Remo have yet to reach the group stage of the CAF Champions League. They are in their fourth continental campaign.
