Nigeria’s League champions, Remo Stars, were finally kicked out of the CAF Champions League on Sunday after a 7-1 aggregate loss to South African club Mamelodi Sundowns in the second preliminary round.
The return match played at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Sunday finished 2-0 almost expectedly for giants Sundowns.
Sundowns, who are five-time South African champions and also the 2016 African champions dominated the game from the kick off to the final whistle. National team goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was rested and 40years old veteran Denis Onyango was in goal.
The South Africans scored their first goal in the 20th minute. Remo Stars, who were seeking redemption after their 5-1 home loss in Abeokuta, attempted to steady themselves midway through the first half. A well-worked short corner saw Ebuka Anthony and Adama Goita combine, but their effort failed to trouble Onyango.
Sundowns doubled their lead just before halftime through Shalulile and maintained control.
Remo Stars gave some fight in the final quarter but it was too late had little effect. Not much was expected from them anyway, after they were beaten 5-1 in Abeokuta last week. The Nigerian champions have dropped to the Confederation Cup leaving only Rivers United in the top flight league.
