5 key rules for the 2026 World Cup Play-offs

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has released detailed match rules ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs starting in Rabat, Morocco on Thursday. The Super Eagles of Nigeria will face off Gabon in the first match of the day while Cameroon and Congo will tackle themselves in the next.

1. Extra time if scores are level

If the match ends in a draw after 90 minutes, it will proceed to extra time of 30 minutes. The additional period will offer both sides another chance to secure a result otherwise the act of a penalty shootout would follow.

2. Penalty Shootout to decide the winner

If the extra time period fails to produce a winner, the result will be determined via a penalty shootout and which team progresses.

3. Five substitutions in regulation time

Teams will be allowed to make up to five substitutions during regular time as against three. The provision gives coaches strategic room to manage fatigue and shape the game.

4. A sixth substitution permitted in Extra Time

Teams are allowed a sixth substitution during extra time period of play.

5. VAR will be used

Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology will be in operation for the playoffs, assisting match officials in major decision-making involving goals, penalties, red cards, and cases of mistaken identity. The use of VAR is expected to improve fairness and accuracy.
