Defence Minister backs officer Yerima against Wike

Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru has praised the conduct of Lieutenant Yerima, the naval officer who stood up to the Minster of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike on Tuesday over disputed access to a piece of land in Abuja.

The land has been identified as belonging to former Naval Chief, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo.

Gambo who spoke to journalists on Wednesday at a press briefing on the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Celebration at the National Defence College, Abuja, said the Federal Government will “defend and protect every member of the Armed Forces performing their lawful duties.”

He said “At the Ministry, and indeed within the Armed Forces, we will always protect our officers on lawful duty.

“We will always protect our officer. He has done well. We won’t allow anything happen to him.

“We are looking into this issue, and I assure you that any officer performing his duty legitimately will be fully protected.”

His comment followed Tuesday’s confrontation between Wike and some military officers reportedly acting on the orders of the former chief of naval staff.
