Julius Godknows and second half substitute, Maduka Okechukwu, were on target as Abia Comets opened their campaign in the 2025/26 Nigeria National League with a 2-0 victory over Lagos-based side, Smart City on Saturday, at the Enyimba Stadium in Aba.
The encounter, which was a Match Day 1 Southern Conference A clash, saw the Comets boys take the lead, through Godknows, who headed home a delightful cross from left-back, Keme Okoriye after 35 minutes.
The hosts continued to show dominance and nearly doubled their lead, but ran out of luck to go into the halftime break with the slender lead.
At the restart, the Comets showcased dominance and dictated proceedings of the game to the delight of club faithful and supporters.
Comets extended their lead after Poweide Morris delivered a brilliant through pass to Maduka, as the forward beat Smart City goalkeeper in the final seconds of the game.
Abia Comets secured their first win of the season under new Technical Adviser, Dipreye Teiboewi and will take on Ikenne-based club, Beyond Limits, in a Match Day 2 clash next weekend in Aba.
