Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has officially defected to the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC).
He announced the decision on Wednesday, December 31, at an event held at the Nike Lake Resort, Enugu.
The former Anambra State governor said, “We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey. We will resist the rigging of the election by every lawful means in 2027.
“We still have a one-year window for everyone to go and verify the schools they attended. We do not want to return to court again, only to be told it is a pre-election matter.
“The pre-election process should start now.”
Reports from ADC affiliates in Enugu say Obi did not join ADC alone but defected with the other South East heavyweights in political terms.
Obi also urged opposition leaders to come together as a family under the leadership of David Mark to rescue Nigeria.
Those present at the event included former Senate President and National Chairman of the ADC, David Mark; former Sokoto State Governor, Senator Aminu Tambuwal; former governors from the South-East; and other dignitaries.
Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha; Senators Ben Obi, Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, and Gilbert Nnaji; Chief Onyema Ugochukwu; Enyinnya Abaribe; Senator Sam Egwu; as well as several other Senators and members of the House of Representatives were said to be also in attendance.
