Morocco beat Nigeria in 4-2 penalty shootout to reach AFCON final

Morocco defeated Nigeria in the 2025 AFCON semifinals, with Youssef En-Nesyri converting the decisive penalty. It was a thrilling shootout that had started well for the Super Eagles after a tense 0-0 draw after extra time.

The match itself was tightly contested, with both sides showing strong defensive organization and limited clear-cut chances. Morocco dominated possession slightly, but Nigeria’s pressing and quick transitions kept the game level throughout 120 minutes.

In the penalty shootout, Morocco held their composure while Nigeria faltered on key attempts. En-Nesyri’s successful penalty sealed the victory, capping off a dramatic and physically intense semifinal that will be remembered for its tension and high stakes.

For Nigeria, the wait for another AFCON title since 2013 goes on. The Super Eagles were not as fantastic as they were at the start of the knockout stages for virtually the whole time throughout this semi-final and failed to make the most of their considerable attacking talent.

Fulham’s Calvin Bassey was again superb at the back.

Morocco, the tournament hosts, will face Senegal in Sunday’s final. Only Senegal stand in their way of a first continental crown since 1976 back in Rabat on Sunday.
