Senegal have emerged as the winners of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. They emerged champions after a drama-filled 1-0 victory over hosts Morocco in the final match played on Sunday night at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
This final game of Africa’s most important football competition did not run smoothly throughout, as the Senegalese players staged a walkout following a controversial refereeing decision.
The referee awarded Morocco a penalty after a VAR review of an incident involving Senegal defender Moussa Diouf and Morocco forward Brahim Díaz. This was followed by immediate chaos as the Senegal players and officials protested vehemently, followed by a walkout.
Several interventions from CAF officials and calmer Senegalese players restored order, and the game restarted. Morocco’s outstanding player Brahim Díaz took the penalty kick, but the tournament’s top scorer surprisingly missed the opportunity. The match then went to extra time after a goalless draw at the end of 90 minutes.
Pape Gueye made a superb shot from outside the box beyond goalkeeper Yassine Bounou in the 94th minute, and this made the great difference.
Despite several desperate attempts in their fightback, the Moroccans could not equalise.
This is Senegal’s second cup success after the 2021 AFCON win.
