The Chairman of the Main Organising Committee of the Niger Delta Games and Executive Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Alabo Boma Iyaye, has extolled the contributions of the late Samuel Ogbemudia to sports development in the Niger Delta region.
Iyaye made the commendation during the opening ceremony of the second edition of the Niger Delta Games, held in Benin City late on Friday. He described Ogbemudia as one of the founding fathers of the region, formerly known as the Midwest region.
“I humbly pay tribute to a father of the Niger Delta, Samuel Ogbemudia, for establishing a framework for the supremacy of the Niger Delta region in Nigerian sports, by which the region continues to produce over 60% of Team Nigeria athletes to international competitions,” Iyaye said.
The Niger Delta Games, initiated by the NDDC in 2024, aim to promote sports development and nurture athletes in the region. The first edition, hosted in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, was acclaimed as one of the best sporting events in the country.
Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was the Minister of State for Investment, Trade, and Industry, Senator John Enoh. Other dignitaries present included the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, and the Director-General of the Nigeria Institute of Sports, Hon Philip Shaibu.
The games will run from February 20 to February 28 in Benin City.
