Abia Comets stage comeback victory over Gateway

By Emmanuel Chinedu

Abia Comets Football Club of Umuahia showed a lot of resilience in the second half, after coming from behind to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Gateway FC, in a Southern Conference A Matchday 14 encounter, on Saturday, at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba.

The hosts didn’t start the game on a good note after Gateway broke the deadlock and went into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, Abia Comets started to show clear determination to change the game’s momentum, when the trio of Maduka Okechukwu, Chinaza Miracle, and Martins Cletus came on and brought a different fashion in the game.

In the 76th minute, Comets levelled the scores off Poweidi Morris from the penalty spot before Cletus struck home a brilliant header through a delightful cross by Okechukwu to secure the maximum points in the final minutes of the encounter.

Comets have now bounced back to winning ways following the victory over the Abeokuta-based side in Aba.

Cletus, who scored the match-winner following his good second-half performance, was named as the SportLightHub Man-of-the-Match.

Speaking after the final game, assistant coach Emmanuel Nelson praised his team for their resilience and determination to come from behind to secure the maximum points

He said, “I’m really proud of the players’ performance for coming from behind to secure the maximum points because it was a difficult game against Gateway FC. It is a massive three points for us.”

Up next for The Comets is an away trip to Awka, to take on oriental rivals Edel FC, in a Southern Conference A Matchday 15 encounter next weekend, at the Awka Township Stadium.
