Man City beat Arsenal to Carabao Cup

Manchester City won the Carabao Cup on Sunday by beating Arsenal 2-0 at Wembley Stadium.

It was the two goals in four minutes in the second half from Nico O’Reilly that made the difference, and City claimed the first trophy of the season.

Pep Guardiola’s men dominated after the break, sinking the Gunners and their hopes of a quadruple this season.

Mikel Arteta has been made to wait for a second major trophy in charge, on what was a very disappointing afternoon for him.

The Gunners were left in disbelief after conceding so quickly, with that seeming to kill any hopes of them turning it around.

It means Mikel Arteta is still waiting for his first trophy since 2020 with Arsenal, who do have three more titles to play for.

It’s a great moment for the Citizens, who may now be buoyed to go on to challenge Arsenal in the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola has become the first manager in the competition’s history to win the EFL Cup five times.

He won his first in 2018 and now has his fifth in 2026. The Spaniard also won this competition in 2019, 2020 and 2021. You could tell by his celebrations on the touchline just what this game meant to him and Man City. This is also Guardiola’s 40th trophy of his managerial career.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are slumping around in disappointment.

It’s a tough one to take for the Gunners, who are going to have to watch their rivals lift the Carabao Cup at Wembley.

This convincing win this afternoon means that City have now won each of their last eight EFL Cup finals.

Nico O’Reilly turned 21 yesterday, and he’s won a trophy today. Adrian Durham said live on talkSPORT: “It’s Nico O’Reilly’s world and we’re all just living in it.

“He’s a left back arriving in the box to score two headers.”

The man himself then said post-match: “Unbelievable feeling.

“Buzzing with today…there’s a bit of disbelief seeing all the fans cheering like that after scoring.

“My whole family came down today, they’re all in the stands, looking forward to celebrating with them.”
