Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi scored for Nottingham Forest as they defeated Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 on Sunday.
It was a massive English Premier League relegation fight, in which visitors Nottingham Forest produced a commanding performance to grab an away victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with two Nigerian internationals featuring for Forest.
Nottingham Forest boss Vitor Pereira started Nigerian striker from the bench, preferring Igor Jesus instead. But Ola Aina started from his usual right back position.
Spurs were the slight favourites heading into the game, and they dominated the early proceedings. Aina had a lot of work to do on the day, as most of Tottenham’s attacks came from Mathys Tel. And the Nigerian did a decent job of keeping him at bay.
Ola Aina completed the full 90 minutes, while Taiwo Awoniyi was introduced with 19 minutes remaining, replacing Brazilian forward Igor Jesus.
Forest broke the deadlock just before the interval as Igor Jesus headed home from a corner, handing the visitors a lead at half-time.
In the 62nd minute, Morgan Gibbs-White, a reported target for Tottenham last summer, doubled the advantage, calmly finishing after being left completely unmarked.
Awoniyi then put the result beyond doubt, meeting a superb cross from Neco Williams with a composed volley at the back post to seal an emphatic victory.
The goal was Awoniyi’s first goal in two months, and it was just his 20th goal for Nottingham Forest.
With the victory, Nottingham Forest opened up a three-point gap over West Ham United, who were beaten 2–0 by Aston Villa.
