The management of Covenant University, Ota, in Ogun State, has confirmed the death of a 500-Level engineering student of the institution, Toluwase Jesutunmise. The student died during a football training session on campus.

A statement by the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Timothy Anake, on Wednesday in Ota, confirmed that the unfortunate incident happened on Monday.

The university described Jesutunmise as “a diligent and vibrant student,” who had participated in a student football training session before stepping out of the game to rest after complaining of leg pain and fatigue.

The statement reads, “Moments later, his teammates reportedly noticed he was gasping for breath.

“He was immediately rushed to the university’s medical centre, located directly opposite the playing field. However, by the time he arrived at the emergency unit, he had stopped breathing,

“Medical personnel promptly initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) using an automated external defibrillator (AED), but all efforts to revive him proved futile and subsequently pronounced dead, with preliminary reports attributing the cause to a previously undisclosed heart condition,” the statement read.

The university said that there was no negligence on the part of its medical staff, noting that all necessary equipment was available and appropriately deployed during the emergency response.

“The management of the institution, led by the Vice-Chancellor, remained at the Medical Centre until the arrival of the student’s parents and continued to support the family.

“The university community expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as a painful moment not only for the parents, institution but for society at large, which has been deprived of the young student’s potential.

“The university extended its condolences to the bereaved family and called on the public to keep them in prayers during this difficult period,” it stated.
