Ballon d’Or nominee Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen scored the Super Eagles goals as Nigeria defeated the Republic of Benin 3-0 in the AFCON 2025 qualifier. The game was played on Saturday in Uyo.
It stands like a revenge for Nigeria’s previous defeat to Benin Republic in the 2026 World Cup qualifying race.
Lookman opened the scoring with a superb solo effort late in the first half. The goal broke the deadlock after a period of sustained pressure from the Super Eagles.
Victor Osimhen came off the bench in the 72nd minute for Victor Boniface and the new Galatasaray striker, made an immediate impact by doubling Nigeria’s lead with a lovely goal.
Lookman sealed the Eagles deal with a second goal to properly prepare his statistics for the African Footballer of the Year award.
It is a huge win for interim coach Augustine Eguavoen who is on his fourth coaching stint with the Super Eagles. The win itself marks a huge lift for the Eagles, who had faced fierce criticism after their shock defeat to Benin in the 2006 World Cup qualifiers – a situation that ended Finidi George’s reign as the team’s coach.
