Anthony Joshua’s driver is expected to be charged by police with “reckless driving” after the horror crash that killed two of the boxer’s close friends. The 47-year-old man, a long-standing member of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, will be charged within the next 48 hours.

The driver was discharged from a hospital in Lagos late on New Year’s Eve and was reportedly taken to Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.

It is said that he was questioned for several hours and gave an official statement of what he said happened in the minutes leading up to the crash, which left two of Joshua’s closest friends, Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele, dead.

Joshua has also been discharged from the hospital and joined his mother in paying their respects to Ghami and Ayodele at a funeral home on Wednesday afternoon, ahead of their repatriation to the UK.

“The driver was released after treatment for minor injuries and was then taken to the state police headquarters for questioning,” a police source said.

“He is in a stable condition and was able to provide us with his version of events that led up to the crash, and we expect a charging decision within the next 48 hours, but the bank holiday may delay proceedings.

“It is possible he could be in court on Friday, but it depends on how quickly the process moves, and it would be for reckless driving.”

Joshua was travelling in a black Lexus Jeep during the incident, which is said to have collided with a stationary truck parked at the side of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The driver of the car that was also involved in the crash has been declared wanted by police after they fled the scene.
