How Onyebuchi’s late strike helped Rangers’ comeback win over Enyimba

By Emmanuel Chinedu

Second half substitute, Ifeanyi Onyebuchi scored the decisive goal as Rangers Int’l came back from behind to win the full points after a 2-1 win over Enyimba, in an Oriental derby, on Sunday, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.

The game was played behind closed doors without fans from both sides. It gave the game a different style and fashion as the first half didn’t produce any magical moments, as it ended goalless.

In the second half, the Visitors, Enyimba, made the first breakthrough of the game, when former Rangers forward, Williams Wonah, scored in a back-to-back goal with a delightful finish against his former side to put Enyimba 1-0 up after 55th minute.  Before Rangers centre back, Chidozie Iwundu bagged his 10th league goal of the campaign with a brilliant header from Essien Emmanuel’s cross to levelled the scoreline 1-1, in the 61st minute.

Second-half substitute, Ifeanyi Onyebuchi scored the decisive match-winning goal when he headed home a delightful cross from Wisdom Ebirim, beating off Enyimba goalkeeper, Kevin Ogunga, to slot it home into the back of the net in the 68th minute.

As the Fidelis Ilechukwu-led side ended their four-game winless streak to secure a massive three points and moved top of the league table on 59 points, one point ahead of second-placed Rivers United (58), with three games to go. The Matchday 35 fixture lived up to the pre-match hype as the two sides, chasing a continental ticket, displayed a mesmerising football artistry that reflects the abundance of talents in the Nigerian league and left many spectators on the edge of their seats.
