Several people are feared trapped after a three-storey building collapsed in the Alakija axis in the Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos.
The building was said to have caved in around 11:40am, not far from the Alakija Bridge in the inward Satellite Town.
Police operatives from the Area E Command and Satellite Division have been at the scene for the past hours, and were working with locals to rescue trapped persons.
As of press time, the number of casualties could not be ascertained, as there are victims said to be trapped under the rubble.
According to reports, the incident occurred unexpectedly and sent shockwaves through the community, as residents and passers-by rushed to the scene in fear of possible casualties and further structural failure.
An eyewitness account stated that the building suddenly collapsed at about 11:40 a.m. on Thursday. The incident disrupted normal activities in the neighbourhood, with people fleeing surrounding buildings for safety.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASTMA, Dr Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the unfortunate incident to the Vanguard, said the rescue mission has begun.
