European Cup: Ex-Golden Eaglets star Cletus Karshe makes HNK Rijeka match-day squad

Former Golden Eaglets captain, Simon Cletus Karshe, has been named in the team that will tackle Derby City of Northern Ireland in their Confluence League clash on Thursday.

Cletus, who is fresh from Nigeria to Europe at 18 years old, is making this great stride just a few months after signing his first professional contract with Rijeka of Croatia. Close watchers say this speaks volumes about how he is highly rated by the technical crew of Rijeka.

The former Mavlon FC midfielder was invited to the Flying Eagles camp, where he is said to have dazzled the Abdul Maikaba-led technical crew of the team, playing some friendly games, before he resumed for the pre-season in Croatia.

His manager said that the initial plan was for him to be back to the Flying Eagles ahead of the WAFU B U20 Championship in Ivory Coast, but Rijeka did not release him for the regional qualifying tournament.

“His importance is very evident with him being named in the squad to battle City tonight,” he said.

It was also gathered that Maikaiba was favourably disposed to making the midfielder the captain of the Flying Eagles if he had made it to the camp for the WAFU B U20 Championship.
