The Nigeria Football Federation has expressed empathy towards players and officials of Rivers United FC of Port Harcourt who sustained minor injuries in a road accident while heading to Awka for a 2026 President’s Federation Cup Round of 16 game against Nasarawa United of Lafia.

“The NFF received with shock the news of the road accident involving your players and officials around Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt while on the way to a President’s Federation Cup Round of 16 match in Awka, Anambra State.

“While we thank God that there were no fatalities, we empathise with those who sustained minor injuries in the accident and wish them a quick recovery,” NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, said on Thursday evening.

According to the fixtures released by the NFF, Rivers United are to take on Nasarawa United FC in Awka on Saturday, with kickoff set for 4pm, and the winner going through to the quarter-finals of this year’s competition.

Rivers United officials had announced the accident before the NFF responded. They wrote this via their X (Twitter) official handle.

“We wish to inform its supporters, stakeholders, and the general public that the team contingent was involved in a road traffic accident on Thursday while traveling to Awka, Anambra State, for the President’s Federation Cup Round of 16 fixture against Nasarawa United.”
