Super Eagles attacker Samuel Chukwueze has reported in Lisbon for international duty for Nigeria ahead of the friendly against Portugal on Wednesday.
He joined the squad on Friday, days after rounding off the burial rites for his mother, who was put to rest last week in Nigeria.
Before his arrival, Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi had reported with others wearing the badge of 99 senior appearances for Nigeria. When he steps out against Cristiano Ronaldo’s team, he becomes only the fourth player in the nation’s history to reach 100 caps. The former Arsenal star joins the Centurion Club list that has Joseph Yobo, Vincent Enyeama and Ahmed Musa.
There had been suggestions that Iwobi was unavailable for Wednesday’s clash with Poland as a result of the red card he received in the closing minutes of Nigeria’s friendly against Jordan in March 2026.
Although 21 players were named in the Super Eagles’ matchday squad for the clash with Poland, only 19 members of the group travelled to Portugal.
Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle, therefore, handed a late call-up to 21-year-old Racing Genk left-back Christian Akpan following his recent senior debut for the Belgian club. The defender has already arrived in Lisbon ahead of tomorrow’s training session.
