Amaobi Ezeaku resigns as NPFL Club Owners Secretary amid uncertainty over Rangers

A fresh development has emerged surrounding Rangers FC General Manager, Barrister Amaobi Ezeaku, after he resigned from his position as secretary of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Club Owners Association.

Ezeaku announced his resignation from the position in an official statement released on June 8, 2026. This brings to an end his tenure with the body that represents club owners across the Nigerian top-flight league.

Ezeaku said, “Today, I formally tendered my resignation as secretary of the Nigeria Premier Football League Club Owners Association.

The announcement comes just days after the Rangers GM revealed that he would need three weeks to decide whether he will remain as the Flying Antelopes Football chief, citing family concerns, personal well-being, and attractive international opportunities.

He expressed gratitude to the association’s chairman, Dr Okey Kpalukwu, members of the executive committee, and club owners for the confidence placed in him throughout his time in office.

According to Ezeaku, the association made significant contributions during his tenure by fostering collaboration among clubs and engaging in discussions to advance the NPFL.

“As I take this step, I do so with a deep sense of gratitude and fulfillment,” he wrote.

“Leadership is ultimately about service, and I am thankful for the opportunity to have served.”

During Rangers’ end-of-season briefing, Ezeaku revealed that FIFA is awaiting a response regarding a Senior Legal Counsel Litigation position based in Miami, while family considerations and the emotional demands of football administration have also influenced his thinking.

He also made it clear that he has no intention of working for another Nigerian club, regardless of financial incentives.

The latest resignation represents the first major official step taken by Ezeaku since publicly acknowledging that he is considering whether to continue his journey with Rangers.

For now, attention will remain focused on the next three weeks, when the Rangers General Manager is expected to make a definitive announcement on his future at the nine-time Nigerian champions.

Whether the resignation from the NPFL Club Owners Association is a precursor to a bigger career move remains to be seen, but it adds another layer of intrigue to one of the most closely watched administrative stories in Nigerian football.
