Tears flowed freely in the streets of Dakar and beyond as Belgium completed an incredible late comeback to beat Senegal 3-2 after extra time. The winning goal came off a last-minute penalty, which helped Belgium reach the last 16 of the World Cup on Wednesday.
The Senegalese were 2-0 up with just four minutes of normal time remaining, but Romelu Lukaku’s introduction to the game was quite impactful for Belgium.
Trailing by two goals late in the game, Belgium mounted a stunning fightback, scoring twice in the space of three minutes with goals by Lukaku in the 86th minute and Youri Tielemans in the 89th minute to force extra time after regulation ended 2-2.
The fate of the match was decided in the 120+5 minute. Tielemans converted a penalty for his second goal of the game, sending Belgium through to the quarter-finals.
Belgium recorded 21 shots on goal during the match, while Senegal had 19 attempts. Senegal had the edge in shots on target with a 6-5 scoreline.
